Lydia Nauli Simanjuntak, a fourth-year law student at the University of North Sumatra, took an IISMA at the University of Liverpool.

Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards, shortened as IISMA, is a scholarship by the Indonesia Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) that offers Indonesian students the opportunity to study abroad for one semester. Lydia Nauli Simanjuntak, a fourth-year law student at Universitas Sumatera Utara, seized this opportunity to savor the experience fully. She is now diving into the vibrant heart of Merseyside, Liverpool, or being exact studying at the University of Liverpool. She selected four modules: Ethics, Music in Context, Global Histories, and Critical Thinking. She believed these chosen modules could develop her skills relevant to future endeavors.

In the academic setting, she was initially startled by the differences between Indonesia and her new environment. To address this, she committed herself to preparatory materials. Reading extensively was crucial; it enhanced her critical analysis skills and broadened her knowledge. During the seminar, a discussion aimed at deepening students' understanding took place, and she participated. Thanks to the reading she had done, she confidently shared her thoughts. As the saying goes, "One sow, another reaps." through this experience, she gained the confidence to speak up and make new friends simultaneously. To balance this, she participated in several student activities, such as a cookie decorating event and film screenings. Through these experiences, she was able to explore her creativity and make friends with both local and international students.

Despite the demanding academic atmosphere, she could still enjoy and explore the vibrant city of Liverpool. Her adventures took her to numerous historical sites, starting with the iconic Beatles statue and museum, the beautiful scenery in Albert Docks, the lively atmosphere of Bold Street, a delightful shopping experience in Liverpool One, a walk through Sefton Park along with her international friends, a tour to Anfield Stadium, and many more. One of the memorable places she visited in Liverpool was a fish and chips restaurant, a classic British dish. It stood out because it was in a discreet area, making it feel like a 'hidden gem.' The portions were generous, and the prices were very student-friendly. She went there with other awardees, and they had already agreed to return before heading back to Indonesia.

Becoming an IISMA awardee was truly a gift for her. She can travel to far-off countries and explore different cultures, meet a diverse range of people, and pave the way for her future endeavors.
