From Medan to Malaysia: A Journey of Growth and Cultural Exchange

As an exchange student representing Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program, I embarked on a life-changing journey. My time in Malaysia has been filled with growth, cultural exchange, and skills development that will stay with me forever.

Embracing a New World

Living in Penang has been an exciting challenge. Adapting to a completely new environment has honed my independence and resilience. For someone accustomed to the comforts of home, simple shifts—like adjusting to cold showers or navigating public transportation—became milestones in my personal growth. Living alone has pushed me to become self-reliant and resourceful. At the same time, exposure to a diverse student community has greatly improved my social skills. As an introvert, I'm proud to have built a network of international friendships with students from countries such as China, Finland, Austria, Germany, and Japan.

Promoting Indonesian Culture in Penang

A highlight of my exchange program was contributing to the "Culturise with Heroes: Here Within U" event on November 8, 2024. Hosted by USM IISMA awardees, the event empowered us to act as cultural ambassadors, showcasing Indonesia’s rich heritage. As a member of the Public Relations team, I helped craft social media content, engaged with visitors, and ensured everyone captured memorable moments at the photo booth.

Visitors—including Malaysian locals and international students from around the world—immersed themselves in Indonesian culture through interactive exhibitions and activities. From writing Aksara Jawa, trying on traditional clothing, playing musical instruments like the angklung, and participating in traditional games, attendees experienced Indonesia's vibrant traditions firsthand.

Fostering Community Connections

Beyond cultural exchange, IISMA USM also partnered with PERMAI (Pertubuhan Masyarakat Indonesia), to organize a volunteering initiative for Indonesian children residing in Penang. This program emphasized educating the children about environmental conservation, personal hygiene, and national pride. I hosted a quiz session to test their understanding of the lessons while motivating them with small rewards. Witnessing the children's joy as they engaged with these activities was deeply fulfilling, showcasing our efforts' tangible impact.

Academic and Personal Growth

Studying at USM has been equally enriching. Immersed in English-based learning materials, I've gained fluency and confidence in language use. The competitive, global environment encouraged me to adopt a more disciplined approach to academics—preparing extensively before and after classes. Alongside my major in Communication Science, I explored Introduction to Management and Business Communication courses, broadening my knowledge and opening doors to interdisciplinary insights.

Gratitude and Reflections

Reflecting on this journey, I am deeply grateful to Universitas Sumatera Utara for their unwavering support and to USM for providing such a vibrant platform. This experience has shaped me into a more adaptable, confident, and knowledgeable individual, ready to contribute meaningfully to Indonesia's future. I am especially thankful for the friendships and memories I've built here, which I will cherish forever.

My time in Malaysia is a testament to the transformative power of international exchange programs for bridging cultures and fostering global connections. By embracing the world, we truly bring the best of Indonesia to the global stage.
