Medan, Indonesia - Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) successfully conducted the International Community Service (KKN Internasional) 2025 program in Karo Regency, North Sumatra. This year's program involved 29 participants, comprising 9 (nina) students from USU and 20 (twenty) international students from Pakistan, Sudan, Thailand, and Malaysia. The participants were divided into two groups assigned to Semangat Gunung Village and Tongging Village.
The preparation and briefing sessions were held online over six weeks, from June 30 to July 27, 2025, using an asynchronous learning method, allowing participants to learn at their own pace and convenience. The field implementation took place from August 2 to August 29, 2025, in Karo Regency.
The departure ceremony for USU students was held on August 2, 2025. A total of nine USU students were escorted to their respective village assignments, where they were formally introduced to local officials and community members as part of the orientation process. The departure was facilitated by staff from the USU International Affairs Office (IAO), program coordinators, and field supervisors. This event ensured that all participants and organizers were well-prepared for a smooth and meaningful implementation of the international community service program.
A monitoring and evaluation visit took place on August 18, 2025, coinciding with the arrival and dispatch of the international students to their KKN locations. Upon arrival at Kualanamu International Airport, the international participants were immediately transported to their designated villages in Semangat Gunung and Tongging, Karo Regency.
Throughout the one-month program, participants immersed themselves in the daily lives of local communities, implementing a variety of projects to improve residents' well-being and quality of life. These initiatives included activities related to education, health, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment.
As the program concluded, a closing and student withdrawal ceremony was held on August 29, 2025. The event began with the pickup of students from their respective villages and continued with a formal ceremony at the Karo Regent's Office. During this event, each group presented the outcomes of their projects to the Regent of Karo, who expressed deep appreciation for the students’ contributions and provided valuable feedback for future program improvement.
The official closing ceremony of the 2025 International Community Service Program took place later that afternoon, attended by USU Vice Rector III, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt. The ceremony was held in a warm and festive atmosphere, marking the successful conclusion of a month-long community engagement program involving both local and international students.
The 2025 International Community Service Program left a lasting impression on all participants, local communities, and supporting partners. Beyond its academic and service-oriented goals, the program served as a platform for cross-cultural collaboration and international partnership, reinforcing USU’s commitment to global engagement and community development.
