Prof. Dr. Rudy Sofyan SS., M.Hum., Head of the International Office at Universitas Sumatera Utara, attended the Coordination Meeting titled “University Program as Foster Parent for Indonesian Migrant Worker Children in Malaysia.”

This meeting was deemed crucial due to the involvement of over 50 Indonesian higher education institutions engaged in international community service for Indonesian children in Peninsular Malaysia from 2022. The universities have conducted one-month Community Service Programs, including on-site internships at guidance centres in Peninsular Malaysia. In 2023, through coordination by the Indonesian Rectors' Council, the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (Independent Campus Freedom Learning) program was initiated at these centres. This initiative has successfully facilitated the return of Indonesian migrant worker children to Indonesia, enabling them to continue their education at the junior and senior high school levels.

Ensuring the continuity of education for Indonesian migrant worker children, both during their time at the guidance centres and after their return to Indonesia, is a significant concern that the academic community in Indonesia must address. The ongoing support and strategic planning from universities are essential to uphold the educational progress of these children.
