FIB USU Hosts 2025 Summer Course under the Theme “Introducing Malay and Batak Oral Tradition and Local Wisdom”

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU), successfully conducted the Summer Course 2025 from October 6 to 17, 2025, with local and international participants in attendance. The international participants came from Pakistan, Poland, Nigeria, Gambia, Ethiopia, Mali, Tanzania, Syria, China, Thailand, and Malaysia. The two-week program, which combined online and onsite sessions, was designed to introduce participants to the cultural, linguistic, and natural diversity of North Sumatra.
The program was officially opened online on October 6, 2025, by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., followed by a series of online lectures held from October 6 to 9, 2025, featuring both international and national experts. The international speakers included Prof. Marzanna Poplawska, Ph.D., from the University of Warsaw, Dr. Farok Zakaria from Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand, and Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim bin Ali from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Malaysia. The national lecturers were Prof. Dr. T. Silvana Sinar, M.A., Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Robert Sibarani, M.S., Prof. Dr. Dwi Widayati, M.Hum., Dr. Edi Sumarno, M.Hum., Prof. Dr. Nursahara Pasaribu, M.Sc., and Dr. H. Azizul Kholis, S.E., M.Si., M.Pd., CMA, CSRS.
The offline session began on October 13, 2025, with the participants’ arrival in Medan, followed by a Welcoming Dinner at the Prof. T. Amin Ridwan Building, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The welcoming event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., from the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnership, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Rusdi Noor Rosa, S.S., M.Hum., as the Head of the Summer Course 2025 Committee. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., along with the 1st Vice Dean, Prof. Drs. Mauly Purba, M.A., Ph.D., and the Head of the International Affairs Office (IAO) Universitas Sumatera Utara, Prof. Dr. Rudy Sofyan, SS., M.Hum.
From October 14 to 17, 2025, participants took part in various cultural and educational activities, including Pantun and Malay dance practice, BIPA sessions, and cultural visits to Istana Maimun and Masjid Raya Al-Mashun. The highlight of the program was a two-day excursion to Deli Serdang and Lake Toba, featuring visits to Deli Serdang Museum, Huta Bolon Museum, Huta Siallagan, and Tomok Village. The Summer Course concluded on October 17, 2025, marking the end of a meaningful academic and cultural exchange that strengthened international collaboration and promoted Indonesia’s cultural heritage on the global stage.
