I have always been intrigued by the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program, a prestigious program offered by Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka that allows Indonesian students to study abroad for one semester at leading universities worldwide. I am thrilled to be one of twenty-nine IISMA Awardees at Universiti Sains Malaysia for the Fall 2024 Semester. This opportunity will allow me to immerse myself in a vibrant academic environment and experience the rich culture of Malaysia.
Founded in 1969, Universiti Sains Malaysia is the second oldest university in the country and one of the leading universities in the country. The university is located in the heart of Penang Island, well known as a melting pot of cultures, with a rich blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and colonial influences. This diversity is reflected in the vibrant festivals, traditions, and culinary scene.
The university’s atmosphere is very vibrant, filled with students from across Malaysia and around the world mingling on campus, socializing, and engaging in various activities. The Facilities are excellent, featuring free shuttle buses, complimentary Wi-Fi, and several co-working places, one of which is Minden, a cozy place to relax and study, where there are also friendly cats to keep you company.
We participated in the orientation week organized by the International Mobility & Collaboration Centre and the Student Buddies the first week after our arrival. We learned about the university's rules and regulations and the local life and culture in Penang and Malaysia. This experience allowed us to bond with international students from countries like Germany, China, Korea, and many others from around the globe.
IISMA allows us to take four courses across various disciplines and schools. I enroll in Fundamentals of Acting, Environmental Studies, Introduction to Computer Graphics, and Malaysian Studies. We usually attend large lecture halls with over a hundred students. The lecturers are friendly, punctual, and confident in their subject matter. The local students are also approachable and easy to talk to, making it easier for me to understand and exchange our cultures.
I am also keen to explore Malaysia’s natural beauty and historical sites during my time here. From the stunning landscapes of Bukit Bendera to the bustling streets of Georgetown, each experience will undoubtedly add to my personal journey and broaden my worldview.
As I embark on this adventure, I am grateful for the support from IISMA and my home university. This experience would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of my incredible friends, lecturers, and staff of Universitas Sumatera Utara. This semester will not only be a stepping stone in my academic career but also a profound journey of self-discovery and cultural exchange. I can't wait to share my experiences and insights as I navigate this exciting chapter of my life!
