Teaching Batak Acoustic Musical Instrument

Arisando Silitonga’s story is one of cultural exchange, humanitarian spirit, and the transformative power of music. As an Ethnomusicology program student at the Universitas Sumatera Utara, He had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Humanitarian Project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This program, spearheaded by the Majelis Rektor Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Indonesia (MRPTNI), aimed to provide access to quality education and cultural enrichment for Indonesian children living in Malaysia.Arisando’s adventure began with a warm welcome event at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. He connected with fellow Indonesian students and teachers, eager to embark on this meaningful journey. To further equip themselves for their mission, they participated in a one-week intensive Event Management course taught by Ms. Azureen at INTI International University.Armed with knowledge and a heart full of passion, Arisando was assigned to Sanggar Bimbingan Sentul, a community center bustling with curious young minds. Here, he transcended the role of a mere teacher, becoming a mentor, friend, and cultural ambassador. Arisando provided essential learning opportunities in reading, writing, counting, and even civics, ensuring a diverse educational experience.

Their experience isn't confined to academics. Ms. Azureen assigned them a special project: introducing traditional musical instruments and dances. It felt particularly fitting for him, an Ethnomusicology student, to share a piece of his cultural heritage through art. Arisando proudly presented the enchanting sounds of Batak Toba instruments like the Hasapi and Seruling. But knowledge alone wasn't enough. Arisando wanted them to experience the joy of making music, so he guided their eager hands on the instruments, witnessing their smiles blossom as melodies took flight. They returned home with a renewed appreciation for their field and a heart brimming with gratitude for the Universitas Sumatera Utara and INTI International University for facilitating this opportunity. Arisando's experience shines a light on the profound possibilities of cultural exchange. It serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to bridge communities through the universal language of music. The success of this program paves the way for future initiatives, promising a brighter future for Indonesian children abroad and fostering understanding between neighbouring nations.
